Onward and upward

Tomorrow I’ll have completed Medill’s grad program in journalism. MSJ, here I come.

It’s been a whirlwind year for sure. Just thinking about those long and tiresome January-through-June days makes me want to take a nap. Talk about boot camp. Twelve hours of work, seven days a week, often with no end in sight. That’s Medill for you: Long and tiresome. A bit of drama. A lot of fun.

Overall what I got was a great education, some wonderful friends, many professional contacts and a sordid understanding of how rapidly journalism will change in the coming years. The Medill 2020 curriculum is full of kinks (oh, how I could go on about the kinks!), but the goals make so much sense. As Jon Stewart so aptly put it: What’s black and white and completely over? Newspapers.

So. I’m moving on. After the holidays I’ll move to Harrisburg, Pa. to work for Capitolwire.com, a subscription-only, web-only newswire that covers Pennsylvania politics. The newsroom is in the state capitol - an absolutely gorgeous building in central Harrisburg. I’m excited to get my hands dirty with some nitty, gritty government reporting.

What this means for erin halasz.com: I’m going to be blogging a whole lot more. And the posts will be less professional than they’ve been since I launched this thing a few months ago. I may redesign the site, too. I’m getting a little tired of the black background and the header image. Anyone agree?

From now on, posts here will be a mix of personal and professional, many of them short little blurbs. I’ll be in a new city and of course I’ll want to write about it. Expect to learn a bit about Harrisburg. And, I hope, a bit about me :-)
